In the late '60s, a speedy little cartoon character raced across the southwestern deserts, leaving its nemesis in the dust. In 1968, Plymouth introduced a high performance car named after the character because Plymouth figured the new model would leave its competition in the dust as well. The Plymouth Road Runner came equipped with a 383-cubic-inch engine that produced 355 horsepower with components from a 440 engine. Various powertrain options were also available including a 426-Hemi, a specially-designed four-speed transmission and a choice of two automatic TorqueFlight transmissions. Homage to the popular cartoon bird was evident in the sound of the horn and its appearance on the exterior. But overall the interior and trim were played down to keep the price down. Beyond anything that Plymouth could have expected, the Road Runner sold an incredible 44,599 units in 1968, was named "Car of the Year" in 1969 and by 1970, was already considered one of the great muscle cars of all time.
